The Regional Municipality of Durham is installing new protected left-turn signals at two intersections in the City of Oshawa and the Municipality of Clarington, in support of Durham Vision Zero.

Protected left-turn signals use a dedicated green arrow to allow drivers to turn left only when oncoming traffic is stopped, reducing the risk of collisions between left-turning and oncoming vehicles.

The signals are being installed in the westbound and eastbound left-turn lanes at the intersection of Taunton Road East and Harmony Road North in Oshawa, and at the intersection of Durham Regional Highway 2 and Courtice Road in Clarington.

The new signals will be installed at the end of October, and will allow motorists to safely make left-hand turns from Taunton Road East onto Harmony Road North and from Durham Regional Highway 2 onto Courtice Road.

The Region says the initiative supports Durham Vision Zero, a long-term plan to ensure a safer transportation system with no lives lost or serious injuries on Durham's roadways.
