Ajax community raises $70,826 for man battling brain cancer

Ajax resident Walter Wallace, diagnosed last October with glioblastoma, has seen the community donate $70,826 — more than double the $35,000 goal — to help cover his home-care equipment and treatment costs.

Ajax resident Walter Wallace, known to friends and neighbours as someone who always helped others, is now facing his own fight after being diagnosed last October with glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer, the Durham Post reports.

Since the diagnosis, Wallace has endured a fall, a stroke and five pulmonary embolisms, leaving him unable to walk or use his right arm; after three weeks in hospital he is now largely confined to bed at home.

His wife Lisa started a GoFundMe to pay for home-care equipment — including a hospital bed, wheelchair ramp, stair lift and wheelchair — plus private care, physiotherapy and medical transportation not covered by insurance, and donations have already reached $70,826 against the $35,000 goal.
